Great director making 'Matrix 5'
And Denis Villeneuve lines up next project
What to know
Warner Brothers is making a new Matrix movie… And Drew Goddard has signed on to write and direct it. Lana Wachowski will serve as executive producer, but otherwise the Wachowskis are not involved. Goddard, if you don’t know has written and directed some great genre projects over the years. He wrote and directed Cabin the Woods as well as Bad Times at the El Royale, and he wrote Cloverfield, World War Z, and The Martian. He also created the original Daredevil series and wrote on Lost, Buffy, and Alias. So the man has pedigree. But what’s even better is Goddard reportedly approached WB with the idea for the movie, which means he’s passionate about The Matrix. That’s always better than the reverse in which the studio tries to fit a director to a project. After the disappointment that was Matrix Resurrections, I’m excited to see this franchise have a new shepherd and go in a new direction. 👍
Denis Villeneuve is lining up his next movie and Dune 3… Villeneuve in talks with Legendary for an adaptation of Annie Jacobsen’s nonfiction book Nuclear War: A Scenario. The book “explores a ticking-clock scenario about what would happen in the event of a nuclear war based on dozens of exclusive new interviews with military and civilian experts.” Which all in all, sounds like a horrifying but necessary cautionary tale of a movie and in some ways could feel like a spiritual sequel to Oppenheimer. If Oppenheimer proved anything, it’s that the threat of nuclear war is still top of mind for people. Jacobsen’s book as a Pulitzer Prize finalist. According to Variety, Villeneuve is in talks to “produce, adapt and/or direct.” Legendary also confirmed that it’s working with Villeneuve on a third Dune movie. Just speculating here, but I’d guess this means an adaptation of Dune Messiah. Unfortunately, no other details were given by Legendary or the trades on a timeline for Dune 3. We don’t even know which of these movies would come first, so stay tuned. 💣
Julia Garner to play female version of the Silver Surfer in Marvel’s Fantastic Four movie… Garner’s star is definitely on the rise. I just hope there isn’t too much backlash to this portrayal of the character. 🏄♀️
