What to know
Succession, Last of Us, White Lotus, Ted Lasso top the 2023 Emmy nominations… The Emmys will likely be delayed to November or January, but we’ve still got a new crop of nominees today, celebrating the last year of TV. As with recent years, the TV Academy seems to have gotten it mostly right (pop culture watchers will recall a time in the not distant past when the Emmys were full of garbage).
I’m thrilled the following were recognized: Andor, Jury Duty, The Bear, Fleishman Is in Trouble, Prey, Jason Segel, Natasha Lyonne, Taron Egerton, Kumail Nanjiani, Daniel Radcliffe (for Al Yankovic!), Dominique Fishback, Lizzy Caplan, Ebon Moss-Bachrach (for The Bear), Jessica Williams, Nick Offerman, Young Mazino, the entire supporting actor in a drama category being just Succession and White Lotus, Paul Walter Hauser, Pedro Pascal getting two nods (Last of Us and SNL), Murray Bartlett getting two nods, and Quinta Brunson getting two nods. I’m a bit bummed Shrinking didn’t make the Best Comedy cut and that Swarm didn’t get a limited series nom. But as I say with all award shows it’s only a snub if they were actually expected to be in contention.
Here are some nomination highlights:
Jenna Ortega is the second-youngest lead actress in a comedy ever
The Last of Us is the first video game adaptation to get major award recognition
10-year-old Last of Us actor Keivonn Montreal Woodard becomes youngest guest star nominee ever
Succession made history by having 3 lead actors nominated (Culkin, Strong, Cox) 🏆
