Variety points to Toy Story’s nod in original as precedent for Barbie — and it seems that’s where WB would have a better shot. Comedies tend to do better in the original category, and in adapted Barbie would have to face heavier hitters like Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon. That said, will voters even consider Barbie an “Oscars movie?” Its success both critically and with audiences is clear — but its blatant capitalism and corporatism might be a turn off. Then again, the strikes might delay a lot of award contenders to next year, giving Barb some runway. 🏆
