Beef season 2 eyes big stars… Despite the fact that Netflix has not officially announced a second season of Beef, the multi-award winning show is quietly prepping for another go round. According to Deadline, creator Lee Sung Jin will be taking The White Lotus approach and tell a brand new story with similar themes for its second season. Beef season 2 will reportedly center around two feuding couples to potentially be played by Charles Melton and Cailee Spaeny on one side and Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway on the other. Gyllenahaal and Hathaway, both A-list movie stars, would be pretty big gets for Netflix, meaning the budget for this surely isn’t cheap. But talks are reportedly very early and nothing is set in stone yet. If they do end up doing it together, it would be a reunion for Jake G and Anne with an E who starred in Love and Other Drugs together. A movie I saw 14 years ago and have no recollection whether it was any good. Meanwhile, Melton and Spaeny are heat seekers of their own, coming off buzzy roles in May December and Priscilla respectively. Lee Sung Jin has reportedly prepared the scripts for Beef season 2 and Netflix and A24 are looking to shoot it in late summer or early fall. 🥩
The Road House drama rolls on… To catch you up, Road House director Doug Liman is boycotting the movie’s premiere because the movie is going straight to streaming. But now Jake Gyllenhaal is saying that “Amazon was always clear that it was streaming.” For the movie’s star to undercut the director this way is pretty shocking and not a good look for Liman at all. Meanwhile, the original Road House screenwriter R. Lance Hill is suing Amazon because he believes the rights to the film should have reverted back to him in November of last year, but that Amazon ignored that deadline and pressed on with making the movie up until January. And Hill accused Amazon of using AI replicate the actors’ voices so it could finish the movie faster — while the strike was going on. A strike that was very much rebelling against AI replacing actors. Hill is hoping to block the release of the movie, streaming or otherwise. Got all that? 💪
Paramount dates Naked Gun remake, Robbie Williams musical biopic, TMNT: Mutant Mayhem sequel, 3rd Paw Patrol movie… Paramount just announced a very eclectic set of films all worthy of inspection. On Naked Gun, I understand the desire to remake this but does its title still of cultural cachet? I just hope its funny. I don’t know much about Robbie Williams, but musician biopics are very hot right now, so it’s no surprise to see one here. And finally, I’m most excited for Mutant Mayhem 2, as it was one of the best movies of last year. A sequel was not a given considering it only made $180M off a $70M budget, so it might not have even turned a profit. 🏔️
Pixar rumored to be making Ducks musical… About ducks. The studio is reportedly eyeing a 2027 release. This rumor is noteworthy for 2 reasons. One it would be Pixar’s first full-on musical (Coco featured some diegetic music) and two, Illumination just put out an animated film about ducks (Migration) — so I wonder when the time comes, will people accuse Pixar of ripping off Illumination? 🦆
A remake of Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead is coming this spring… And it stars Nicole Richie and June Squibb. I know at least one person who is very excited about this — so I guess the original has its cult fans. 💀
Queer Eye replacing Bobby with Jeremiah Brent… Brent is an interior designer who has appeared on HGTV. He was also featured in Architectural Digest’s AD100. So he sounds qualified. 👁️
All 4 of Sam Mendes’ Beatles movies will be released in 2027… This is such an ambitious and unusual mega project, I don’t know whether to question it or admire it for its chutzpah. 🎸
Emily Blunt reuniting with Dwayne Johnson in Benny Safdie’s The Smashing Machine… Those two love working together. 💥
Christina Hendricks, Christopher Lloyd, Helen Hunt to guest in Hacks season 3… Remember Hacks? It’s finally coming back. 🎤
All 5 Oscar-nominated songs will perform at the Oscars… Including Billie Eilish and Ryan Gosling. He’s just Ken. 🎶
Netflix might raise prices again soon… Because duh. Just assume it’s going to do this once a year if not more. 🍿
Poor Things will be on Hulu starting March 7… Just before the Oscars. So, sorry if you already paid for it on VOD. 🧠
Will Forte: ‘I fucking hate’ that WB won’t release Coyote vs. Acme… Ugh this whole situation is such a bummer. 😢
AMC debuting 3 new Nicole Kidman ads in theaters Friday… AMC knows what the people want. 📽️
Auli’i Cravalo and Dwayne Johnson are returning to voice Moana 2… Makes sense. 🌊
Mr. and Mr. Smith is a hit for Amazon… As it should be! 👏
