What to know
Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence and cast say they’ll do a revival or movie eventually… It appears the interest is there, but it’s just a matter of logistics. (And I’d assume a studio willing to make it). Another issue: the defunct hospital where Scrubs shot was torn down some years ago. I guess they’d have to rebuild those sets on a stage somewhere? And I agree with Donald Faison that this should be a movie. Whatever it is, it will be wonderful — when it actually happens. For now, us Scrubs stans have the Zach and Donald podcast. 👩⚕️
Top Gun: Maverick holds strong with $86M second weekend… The Tom Cruise sequel dropped just 32% week to week, that’s the smallest decline ever for a movie that opened above 100M. The word of mouth is strong with this one. It will be very interesting to see if the love lasts into award season. 😲
Morbius proves memes don’t equal money… Morbius was re-released in theaters this weekend, and though it might be internet joke of the moment (the movie trended on Twitter last week), it’s not a surprise box office darling. Virality doesn’t always lead to butts in seats. Just ask the people who made Snakes on a Plane. 🦇
What We Do in the Shadows renewed for seasons 5 and 6… Ok, so not every vampire had a bad day today. 🧛♀️
Maria Bakalova scores major Marvel role in Guardians 3… She might have missed out on the Oscar, but that hasn’t stopped Bakalova from becoming the toast of the town. 🦝
Brett Goldstein says Ted Lasso season 3 is being written as its last… Maybe this will free up Bill Lawrence to do the Scrubs revival! ⚽️
Unreleased Freddie Mercury-era Queen song due in September… Who wants to live forever? The show must go on, so keep yourself alive. 🎸
The 2.5-hour Stranger Things season 4 finale will have more VFX shots than all of season 3… Oh, so that’s where all of Netflix’s money went! 💸

What to watch
What’s the point if we’re not telling secrets? That’s me paraphrasing Pete Holmes paraphrasing Mike Birbiglia on the topic of stand up comedy. No one is embodying that more right now than Jerrod Carmichael who opens up his latest special Rothaniel by declaring his intention to talk about secrets. The hour that follows is a master class in vulnerability, where every moment feels like a high-wire act. To say this thing took chutzpah is an understatement. Carmichael has made headlines for coming out as gay in the HBO Max piece — and while that is the central secret he built this work around, it is only the tip of the confessional iceberg. He’s revealing a lot, about himself and his family, but as is always the case, the specific is universal. Carmichael is inviting everyone in to his interior life so that they’ll examine and make peace with their own closeted skeletons. (“We’re all in the closet about something,” the comedian said on a recent episode of Dax Shephard’s Armchair Expert). “Inviting” isn’t metaphorical by the way, in the piece he openly encourages the in-person audience to ask him questions. That leads to some electrifying moments in which the comedian is confronted by his own manipulations. Bo Burnham does an excellent job directing, especially in these instances, capturing the anguish and turmoil Carmichael is putting out there. It’s also funny! Like really funny in a cathartic way. Stand up is evolving as a medium and comedians are taking big risks with the “special.” Jerrod Carmichael joins recent luminaries like Hannah Gadsby, Birbiglia, and Burnham in pushing this art form forward.
