What to know
Rest easy, Dune Part II is happening… A lot of cinephiles are demanding you see Dune in a theater, but the script is basically an elongated TV pilot. As visually spectacular as Dune is—and it is quite spectacular—there’s no denying that Denis Villeneuve made half a movie. Thus, it was nice and maybe even necessary of Warner Bros to greenlight the second half of the story. Hopefully we get a lot more Zendaya in the next one. 🪱
Kathryn Hahn’s Joan Rivers show not moving forward at Showtime… Hey, remember this? Turns out the people making this Joan Rivers bio-series never had the rights to Joan Rivers’ life, so it’s not happening! Oh well! I didn’t have a huge issue with Hahn playing Rivers, but they might want to consider a Jewish woman next time. 🎤
Beloved actor reportedly joining Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in “super-secretive role”… Sorry, formerly* super-secretive role. Quantumania, which already boasts the return of Jonathan Majors to the MCU, just got even more exciting. Sadly though the aforementioned beloved actor said he won’t be doing any Marvel movies after this one. 🐜
Firearm that killed Halyna Hutchins was reportedly used for target practice by crew members earlier that day… This is a deeply troubling update from the Rust set and in my opinion, further reason for doing away with live weapons on sets. 🤬
Ramin Bahrani and Jenni Konner board Kumail Nanjiani’s Hulu series Immigrant… I’m very interested to see what White Tiger director Bahrani brings to this project! 📺
Ryan Gosling reunites with Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance for Universal monster pic Wolfman… get ready for a very sad wolfman 🐺
HBO renews Succession for season 4… The Roys will live to fuck off another day 🖕

What to watch
TV Trailer: Cowboy Bebop — Nov. 19 on Netflix
Showrun by André Nemec, starring John Cho Mustafa Shakir, Daniella Pineda, Alex Hassell, and Elena Satine.
Full disclosure: I come at this having never seen the original Cowboy Bebop anime series. But my guess is that this trailer hems closely to the source material — because there’s no other explanation for its disparate tone, genre mashing, and slightly stilted presentation. Not that that’s a bad thing! All of those elements feel very anime and bring a freshness we’re not typically getting on TV right now. Few live-action anime adaptations have the guts to carry over the hyper stylization, so that’s already getting this series started on a good foot. Then you add John Cho’s charm and you’ve got me super interested. Many of the top YouTube comments on this trailer predict this will either be amazing or terrible — and I have to agree. Nemec and company have a big swing here that might be a home run or a total whiff. We’ll see.
