Mission: Impossible 8 is all but guaranteed to lose money… In case you’re not aware, this production has been pretty doomed. After already suffering numerous delays and setbacks, MI8 just went thru another multi-week delay after there was a malfunction with the production’s $25 million submarine. Every time a movie stops like that, you still have to pay everyone, so the costs go way up. And World of Reel is reporting that Mission Impossible 8’s budget is now near $400 million. Let’s say Paramount spends $100 million on marketing, which is a conservative guess for a blockbuster of this size. So it costs all in $500 million. Because movie theaters take a cut of the box office, conventional wisdom states that movies need to make twice their cost to break even which means Mission Impossible 8 will have to be a billion dollar movie to turn a profit. The last one made $567.5 million worldwide total — and uh, take a look at the box office recently. It’s struggling. Do you think the 8th movie in 30-year-old franchise with an aging star is going to get to $1B worldwide? Bottom line, movies need to cost less cause the math is not mathing. 💸
Furiosa and Garfield lead worst Memorial Day in 29 years… Oof. What else there even to say about the failing box office? Things will look a little bit better when Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine come along. But man this is bleak. 📉
Modern Family stars tease something on social… I don’t think it’s going to be a full on reboot or spinoff, we would have heard about that from ABC/Disney by now. So it’s probably a digital something or commercial. 🏠
