What to know
And the Emmy nominees are… There’s no way the Emmys were going to please everyone, but as I look over the list I think they did pretty well considering there is just SO MUCH TV. Here are some notable takeaways:
Genre broke through in a big way: The Mandalorian tied The Crown for the most nominations with 24, followed by WandaVision with 23. Lovecraft Country (RIP) got 18 nominations! The Boys earned a Best Drama nod. The Oscars might not take genre seriously, but the Emmys clearly do.
A record year for diversity: A record 49 non-white actors and hosts were nominated. SNL’s Bowen Yang became the first Chinese American actor to get an Emmy nod. Pose’s Mj Rodriguez became the first trans woman nominated in a lead acting category. Bridgerton earned an unsurprising 12 nods and the Emmys corrected the Golden Globes’ mistake by giving I May Destroy You 9 nominations.
Other odds and ends: Ted Lasso notched a deserved 20 nominations. Don Cheadle’s 98-seconds of Falcon and the Winter Soldier got him a nod and even he’s confused about that. Stunt performers were recognized for the first time. Quibi is there! Kenan Thompson, Aidy Bryant, Maya Rudolph, Sterling K Brown, and Jean Smart (natch) are double dipping. And Jessica Walter got a posthumous voice acting nomination for Archer.

What to watch
Teaser Trailer: Pixar’s Turning Red — March 11, 2020
Written and directed by Domee Shi, starring Rosalie Chiang and Sandra Oh.
This is just a teaser so there’s not much to go on, but I love the animation style Shi and Pixar are using here. It’s nice to see the world’s premiere animation studio continuing to expand its visual palette. On the other hand, they have tread the territory of people becoming animals a few times before, so hopefully Shi brings her own unique spin to the genre. For what it’s worth, I believe she will. What else? Using Backstreet Boys’ “Larger Than Life” here is fun and red pandas are the best. Pixar gon’ Pixar.
