Did the Globes just spoil the Oscars?
And Emma Stone reveals the worst career advice she ever got
What to know
The Golden Globes present bad telecast but good awards… If you discount Jo Koy bombing his monologue and throwing the writers under the bus, as well as most of the strained presenter bits, the Golden Globes were actually an OK award show. Because the awards themselves were satisfying and the speeches were good. I would not be surprised if the Globes’ big winners (Oppenheimer for Best Drama, Robert Downey Jr., Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Lily Gladstone, and Cillian Murphy) are the exact 5 awarded at the Oscars. It seems like the Globes has become less of the wild card it once was and instead more inline and predictive of mainstream industry tastes. Which is good. What was also good: Seeing some historic wins by Gladstone and Ali Wong. 🌐
The Emmys also gave out some awards this weekend… The Creative Emmy Awards, which honor below the line folks, were held (ahead of the main Emmys telecast next Monday) and included some cool winners. The Last of Us won a ton of technical awards, as well as Best Guest in a Drama trophies for Nick Offerman (!) and Storm Reid. Sam Richardson won Best Guest Actor in a Comedy! While his best bud Tim Robinson took home the short form award for I Think You Should Leave. Completely deserved. Meanwhile, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story won Best TV movie. Amazing! What a world! 🏆
Emma Stone once got some truly garbage and sexist advice from a male studio executive… While speaking at the Palm Springs International Film Awards, Stone recalled a meeting from early in her career in which a male exec told her “That for male actors, it’s a marathon, not a sprint. And in his eyes, for women, it was a sprint, not a marathon.” Stone went on, “I realize that advice is total garbage because the majority of the women that I look up to in this industry … have proven that as time goes on, life and work only get more interesting and more fulfilling.” On the one hand, older women have been shunned and discarded by Hollywood forever. And while that exec was perpetuating a sexist double standard, he was addressing one that is based in reality. That said, things are changing and Stone is right. It’s not hard to think of all the women who are absolutely crushing it right now at marathon pace. Like Meryl Streep, Angela Bassett, Sandra Huller, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Emily Blunt, Issa Rae, Danielle Brooks, Natalie Portman, Ali Wong, Rosamund Pike, Lily Gladstone, Annette Benning, Helen Mirren, and Jodie Foster. And those were just the women highlighted at the Golden Globes last night. 🙋♀️
And everything else
Oscars predictor Scott Feinberg seems to think Barbie will win Best Picture… He made this call before the Globes, when it seemed more possible. Then again, at this time last year, he thought Top Gun: Maverick would win, and how did that turn out? 🙈
American Born Chinese canceled after one season on Disney+… No surprises there. This looked like a mega expensive series that made no splash whatsoever. ❌
Jacob Elordi to play Frankenstein for Guillermo del Toro… Makes sense, he’s been depicting a monster for year on Euphoria. 🧌
The White Lotus season 3 cast includes Leslie Bibb, Jason Isaacs, Michelle Monaghan, and Parker Posey… Great! 𑁍
Emma Stone says Cruella sequel is a “work in progress”… I’m glad this is still happening. Cruella is underrated. 🐾
Prince’s Purple Rain is becoming a stage musical… I’m honestly surprised this hasn’t happened until now. ☔️
The Eras Tour film becomes highest grossing concert movie of all time… There is no stopping Ms. Swift. 🎸
Rhys Darby says a Flight of the Conchords reunion has been discussed… Please, please, please! 🇳🇿
Gerard Butler to reprise How to Train Your Dragon role in live-action adaptation… Love it. 🐲
Blue Eye Samurai creators are planning 4 seasons and a movie… I’m so down for that. 👏
