Disney announces surprise Moana sequel in theaters this fall… The Moana sequel is the definition of a double edge sword when it comes to the future of movies. Because on the one hand, it’s yet another sequel. CEO Bob Iger admitted that the company is leaning into sequels, which is unfortunate, but it’s not surprising considering how their originals have done recently. But you know what you need before successful sequels? Successful originals. That said, there’s some good news about the Moana sequel. It was originally intended as a streaming series but the studio made the wise decision to make it a theatrical film instead. To me that signals Hollywood has realized the biggest franchises belong in theaters. Which is great for those of us who still value the moviegoing experience. The Mouse also announced that Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour film is coming to Disney+ on March 15, and that Zootopia 2 is eyeing 2025, while Toy Story 5 and Frozen 3 are planned for 2026. And the Percy Jackson series has been renewed. 🐭
David Leitch to direct new Jurassic World movie, aimed at summer 2025… I’m pretty optimistic about this because it’s a soft reboot and potentially won’t feature any returning cast members. Also, Leitch is an energetic and entertaining director, so he could be the jolt this 30-year-old franchise needs. On the other hand, it has a July 2, 2025 release date, which is a very quick turnaround. Hopefully the quality doesn’t suffer because of that. 🦖
Consumer interest in theatrical films drover 17% increase in home video spending… Hello Hollywood, are you getting this? Putting movies in theaters first drives interest. I doubt this will change Netflix’s mind, but I think this realization is starting to sink in elsewhere. 🍿
