What to know
Some kind of follow-up to Easy A is still in the works… An expansion of the excellent Emma Stone coming-of-age movie has been in development since 2019, but now Aly Michalka, who appeared in the original, says a sequel/retelling with some returning cast is “semi-real.” This is hardly a confirmation, so we’ll keep an eye on it. B.J. Novak’s FX comedy anthology has quite the cast… Ben Platt, Tracee Ellis Ross, Daniel Dae Kim, Lola Kirke, Soko, Jermaine Fowler, Ayo Edebiri, Lucas Hedges, Kaitlyn Dever, Jon Bernthal, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Ed Asner, George Wallace, Boyd Holbrook and Beau Bridges 😮

What to watch
Trailer: Ghostbusters: Afterlife - Nov 11 in theaters
Directed by Jason Reitman, written by Reitman and Gil Kenan, starring Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon, McKenna Grace, Sigourney Weaver, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and Logan Kim.
While some on the internet are wondering where the comedy is in this trailer, it’s clear to me that Reitman and Sony want you to get a Spielberg/Stranger Things vibe here. (Especially considering it features one of the young stars of Stranger Things). Over the long promotional campaign for Ghostbusters: Afterlife, I’ve come to accept that its tone doesn’t seem to be exactly replicating the originals — and that’s OK. They tried that with Kristen Wiig’s Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, and while I think that movie is actually alright, it didn’t leave a lasting impact and didn’t lead to a new franchise (which is the goal of every major tentpole these days). Reitman is still aping ‘80s sci-fi, just a different brand of ‘80s sci-fi, one that has proved pretty successful recently. This trailer is just good enough to push me toward wanting to see the movie sooner rather than later.
