What to know
How are SAG-AFTRA actors doing game shows and talk shows?… I’m so confused by the strike rules. A number of network game shows—including Dancing With the Stars, Wheel of Fortune, and Snake Oil (Fox’s new Shark Tank/To Tell the Truth mashup)—announced celebrity guests this week and many of them are SAG members. Additionally, certain very high profile union members have made talk show appearances, like Matthew McConaughey’s recent stop at The View or Josh Gad’s recent interview on Live With Kelly and Mark. Reality and game show work is actually under a separate SAG contract, so technically, it’s fine for union members to appear. With the talk shows, it seems union members just haven’t been promoting projects created by struck companies. But in all of these cases the SAG card carriers are literally appearing on struck companies’ programs. By showing up at all, aren’t they helping and supporting the struck companies? The networks are going to run all kinds of ads showing the celebrities on these shows. It doesn’t seem like anyone is breaking any rules — but it’s just hard for me to wrap my brain around Josh Gad going on ABC as being fine, but if he speaks about Frozen, let’s say, then it would be a problem. 🤔
