What to know
How high will Taylor Swift go at the box office?… We’re a week away from the Eras Tour dropping in theaters and it has already sold $100M in pre-sale tickets worldwide. But what is its domestic opening weekend going to look like? /Film says at least $100 million, but Deadline is saying it could go as high as $125 million, while Box Office Pro suggests an opening as high as $155 million. Which would put it in striking distance of Barbie’s 2023 record opening of $162M. This is entirely unprecedented for a concert film and all but guarantees it to become the highest grossing concert movie of all time. The current record-holder is Michael Jackson’s This Is It, which only grossed $261 million world wide. It’s possible Taylor beats that in just a few weeks. The Ears Tour already broke the single-day sales record for AMC, topping Spider-Man No Way Home, which went on to make $1.9 billion worldwide, and it set the pre-sale record for Cinemark theaters. It’s very likely the Eras Tour film ends up in the top 10 grossing movies of the year and maybe even in the top 5. If course it’s worth noting that Swift is doing all of this without a big Hollywood studio and virtually no big marketing push. Remarkable. 🎸
