What to know
Charlie Kaufman wrote an animated feature for DreamWorks… Animation fans are eating right now. DreamWorks just revealed at Annecy, the animation film festival, that Orion and the Dark is coming to Netflix next year. It’s written by mind-bending writer and director Charlie Kaufman, based on the book by Emma Yarlett. Jacob Tremblay plays Orion, “a scaredy-cat indoor kid” and “ball of adolescent anxiety,” while Paul Walter Hauser (!) voices Dark, the living embodiment of the night and Orion’s biggest fear. The Wrap said the footage shown featured Kaufman’s signature quirkiness and beautiful animation from the studio that’s bringing us TMNT: Mutant Mayhem. Kaufman is no stranger to animation, having made the stop motion drama Anomalisa, but it will be great to see him bring his distinct viewpoint to a big studio movie aimed at the mainstream. 👏
