What to know
Sounds like Nintendo wants to make more movies… Nearly 30 years after the disastrous live-action Super Mario Bros movie, Nintendo is finally getting back into film. Illumination is making an animated Mario movie and now there’s news that the studio’s CEO Chris Meledandri is joining Nintendo’s board. One live-action Zelda movie, please! 🎮
Legendary director Richard Donner dies at 91… Love your modern superhero blockbusters and your action comedies? Thank Richard Donner. /Film has a great write up about his legacy 🎬
“Top Chef’s feel-good season collapses in on itself”… Jezebel has an excellent analysis of how Top Chef blew its best season in years. Gabe Erales’ downfall from good-guy winner to exposed sexual harasser is tragic yet unsurprising and totally emblematic of our society. I hope Top Chef does more than put out a statement, but I doubt it will 🍴
The Lord of the Rings movies “almost” had some nudity… looks like we missed out on some Hob-bits 🍆
A Gunpowder Milkshake sequel is in the works… maybe drop on Netflix first, movie 🥛
Charlize Theron might get a Fast spin-off… make it happen, Vin 🚘
Kaley Cuoco lines up action-thriller… sounds like an appropriate follow up to Flight Attendant 💥
Paddington 3 begins shooting next year… he’s a good bear 🐻
Pokémon Go has made $5 billion in 5 years… that’s a lot of Go dough 💰

What to watch
TV Trailer: Succession s3 — HBO this fall
Succession is already a phenomenon. This brilliant, brutal, twisty, hilarious, horrifying, punishing, captivating, fascinating family drama won 7 Emmys last year. The Emmys don’t always get it right, but it’s hard to argue with anything other than Succession being the apex of serial dramas right now. Few shows speak to our times as well as Succession. From media and political polarization, to our obsession with wealth and the rich, to generational divides, family loyalty, daddy issues, corporate corruption, greed, sacrifice, power and more, it’s all on the page and the screen. And yet it hasn’t aired a new episode since October 2019. TV has felt the void. In a landscape of a lot of good TV, Succession is truly great. I cannot give it a heartier recommendation. Thank God it’s coming back this fall.
