What to know
Mike Myers to play 7 characters in new Netflix limited series… I’ll just quote Netflix on this one: “Mike Myers will play seven brand new characters in The Pentaverate, a limited series he created about a secret society of five men who have been working to influence world events for the greater good since the Black Plague of 1347.” Ken Jeong, Keegan-Michael Key, Debi Mazar will co-star. Sounds wild, but I’m all for a proper Mike Myers comeback. 🤔
I Think You Should Leave season 2 is coming to Netflix July 6… get your TC Tuggers ready, the hysterical cult sketch series from Tim Robinson is back. The first season caught a lot of people off guard with just how funny it is, so while expectations are high, getting season 2 is a gift. 🍿
Songs from Bo Burnham’s Inside coming to streaming services Thursday… people were really mad about the songs not being on Spotify. Now, they will be. Problem solved 🎶
Taraji P. Henson will play Miss Hannigan in Annie Live! on NBC… I can see it 🍪
Chris Harrison is leaving The Bachelor franchise after 19 years… no rose for you 🌹
Bryan Fuller is remaking Stephen King’s Christine for Blumhouse… death, taxes, and Stephen King adaptations 🎞
Lisa Kudrow joins Disney+ musical feature Better Nate Than Ever… but she won’t be singing apparently 😡
Hacks has been renewed for a second season… love someone as much as HBO loves Jean Smart 🎤

What to watch
Over the course of May, between diaper changes and bottle feeds, I was able to sample some of NBC’s new comedies. I quit Kenan and Young Rock after about 2 episodes each. But Mr. Mayor, available on Hulu, flashed promise and packed a ton of hard jokes over its first 9 episodes. Though it echoes local government comedies like Parks and Rec and Spin City, creators Tina Fey and Robert Carlock infuse Mr. Mayor with their signature style of wacky, joke-dense writing. Basically, if you liked 30 Rock, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, or even Great News, you’ll be on board with Mr. Mayor. Fey and Carlock then fill their latest sitcom with the always-charming Ted Danson, a very specific Holly Hunter riff on Leslie Knope, and snarky goofballs Vella Lovell and Mike Cabellon. But I was particularly impressed with Bobby Moynihan and his deeply weird character. While Mr. Mayor is still figuring itself out (the pandemic cut its first season from 13 episodes to just 9), its joke-per-minute ratio is high and its cast is diverse and engaging. It’s snappy and fun and about 3.5 hours of your time.
