Beyoncé in “deep talks” to open the Oscars with Compton tennis courts performance… This would be very cool and a huge get for the Academy Awards, who desperately need the eye balls. The problem is the show likely won’t be able to promote such a stunt (aside from leaks a la this Variety story), so will a “surprise” Beyoncé number actually do anything to move the Nielsen needle? I’m not so sure. 🎾

Trailer: Where the Crawdads Sing — July 22 in theaters
Directed by Olivia Newman, written by Lucy Alibar, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Taylor John Smith, Harris Dickinson, Michael Hyatt, Sterling Macer, Jr., and David Strathairn.
Hey, it’s that book everyone read! It’s actually refreshing, in 2022, to see a best-selling novel become a feature film aimed at theaters rather than a stretched-out miniseries on a 2nd-tier streaming platform. That said, I think this trailer is mostly resting on the laurels of the book and that dynamite new Taylor Swift song. As someone with no familiarity with Crawdads before watching this trailer, I’m not exactly sold on what made this so compelling for readers? She grew up in the marsh and is then involved in a pot-boiler mystery. What am I missing? Normal People star Daisy Edgar-Jones looks to be putting in the requisite effort (though jury’s out on her accent) and I was happy to see notable “that guy” David Strathairn show up. But mostly, I just want to hear the full version of that moody Tay Tay song.
