What to know
Netflix might rerelease Glass Onion in theaters… After its streaming debut Dec 23. The movie’s one-week, 650-theater run was successful and even CEO Reed Hastings admits Netflix left money on the table (the movie could have made $300M), but it seems Netflix doesn’t care. Variety reports Netflix film chief Scott Stuber is in favor of more theatrical releases like this, as a way to raise the company’s profile and drum up excitement — but CEOs Ted Sarandos and Hastings seem more opposed. Hastings did leave the door open a crack, “It’s a promotional tactic like film festivals, and if it works well we will do more of it, but he went on to say, “We are not trying to build a theatrical business, we are trying to break through the noise.” It seems Glass Onion’s box office success won’t majorly change how the streamer does business — which if you like watching movies in theaters is a shame. 🍿
