What to know
Nintendo and Illumination’s next animated film will reportedly be The Legend of Zelda… After Nintendo pulled the plug on a live-action Zelda show at Netflix years ago, it was unclear whether we’d ever get a proper adaptation. Thank the goddess (and Mario), it seems to be really happening this time — albeit in animation. The question is what will this look like? Will it be something more mature and artistic or cartoony? Mario was a natural fit for the latter, and worked within Illumination’s house style, but Zelda gets very dark at times. In my opinion, I’d prefer the elegant animation style of Breath of the Wild rather than the cartoony world of Link’s Awakening. Illumination was under a lot of pressure to get Mario right, but its story and world is fairly simple. The stakes are high with Zelda, especially in the eyes of fans, due to its rich and detailed lore. Oh and what do you do with Link, who for decades has been a mostly silent avatar? It seems this news has only raised more questions. ⚔️
