• Oscars unveil shortlists for international, documentary, music, VFX categories and more… Top takeaways: The best song field is full of superstars (good for the broadcast), including Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and Taylor Swift (“Carolina” from Where the Crawdads Sing). Sadly, Ms. Swift’s All Too Well didn’t make the cut for best live-action short. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and German film All Quiet on the Western Front topped the shortlists with 5 placements each. So definitely add All Quiet to your award season watch list. Unsurprisingly, Top Gun: Maverick, Everything Everywhere, Avatar 2, and Babylon are also strongly represented in various technical categories. I’m a bit bummed Sr. didn’t make the feature doc list, but it happens! And most importantly, something called “My Year of Dicks” has been named in the animated short field. 🏆
