What to know
/Film: “2023’s box office makes it clear that audiences want more than sequels and reboots”… Yup! And yet I’m confident Hollywood will take the wrong lessons from Barbenheimer and give us a litany of Barbie sequels (see below) and overwrought biopics. To /Film’s point, in 5 days Barbie crossed $200M (and did another $26M on Tuesday), while Oppenheimer crossed $100M. Meanwhile, Mission: Impossible 7 has only made $125M domestic in two weeks. The Tom Cruise pic might not turn a profit! People are not going to the movies as often as they used to, and it seems are now only turning out for true event movies or special experiences they can’t get elsewhere or haven’t had before. Will Hollywood listen? 🎟️
