Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter addresses Lightyear disappointment… Docter says Pixar has done a lot of soul searching to figure out what went wrong with the movie’s reception, landing on this explanation, “We asked too much of the audience. When they hear Buzz, they’re like, great, where’s Mr. Potato Head and Woody and Rex? And then we drop them into this science fiction film that they’re like, What?” I think this is a narrow and patronizing view of the audience. To suggest moviegoers couldn’t handle the curve ball is concerning — and probably why we’re getting the safe choice of Toy Story 5. This kind of thinking doesn’t bode well for the future of Pixar. 🚀
