Squid Game creator confirms season 2… It’s not an official announcement from Netflix, but it seems Hwang Dong-hyuk is making a second season. He said at a recent LA screening that, “there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently.” Outdoing himself is going to be incredibly hard for Hwang but I can’t wait to see what he comes up with and how he furthers the story. 🦑
Emilio Estevez says he’s not anti-vaxx amid Mighty Ducks exit blame game… Estevez won’t be returning for season 2 of the Mighty Ducks Disney+ series. Reports claimed it’s because he refuses to get vaccinated, but the actor says it was over contract disputes. This is a very muddy situation right now but I’ll let you know if there’s a quack in the case. 🦆
Friday Night Lights reboot movie and series might be on the way… Producer Brian Grazer reveals that the previously announced reboot film is still in the works (minus director David Gordon Green) and that it will focus on a Texas border town circa 2015. Grazer then teased that a current-day follow up series might also be happening as well. Lots of clear eyes and full hearts on the horizon 🏈

What to watch:
No one—and I mean no one—can act against a dog, a robot, an inanimate object, or absolutely nothing better than Tom Hanks. He is the undisputed master of commanding solo film performances and his latest lonely opus is Miguel Sapochnik’s Finch, now available on Apple TV+.
Finch is a touching post-apocalyptic fable about a flawed man with decent resources trying to make the most of a tragic situation. To get to its central conceit—man, dog, and robot race against the elements—the movie asks you to accept that Hanks’ character has almost superhuman engineering, mechanical, and computer science skills. If you can buy into that fact, the rest of this well-paced and heart-filled journey will go down smooth. In fact the way screenwriters Craig Luck and Ivor Powell lay out the rest of the exposition and rules of their post-apocalyptic America is pretty clever, especially with how their climate disaster informs Hanks’ character decisions.
As one would expect, Hanks himself is where Finch’s most valuable strengths lie. He grounds a cartoonishly high concept with deep pathos, bringing vast dimensions to his relationships with a dog and not one, but two (!) robots. All the while he’s spouting technical jargon and making the scientist side believable. It’s mostly through Hanks well-known face and voice that we connect to this story and its themes of parenting, trust, connection, and legacy. Caleb Landry Jones also deserves kudos for his voice portrayal of Jeff the robot.
Uproxx describes Finch as a live-action Pixar movie — and it’s hard to find a better description than that. The movie goes to some darker, more adult places than typical Pixar fare (though not by much), but in terms of big ideas and big emotions, it’s right up there with the beloved animation studios’ best. In fact, it’s the most heart-tugging apocalypse movie this side of Wall-E.
