What to know
Spielberg’s Amblin signs deal with Netflix… Surprise! After trying to get Netflix out of the Oscars, Steven Spielberg is now working for them. Under this new deal, Amblin and Spielberg will still be set up at Universal but also make 2-5 films a year for Netflix. He may even direct some of the Netflix movies. It had seemed Apple would be his streaming home, but guess not! 🎞
Hitman’s Bodyguard’s Wife flops at the box office… The Ryan Reynolds/Sam Jackson/Salma Hayek action comedy sequel only did about $11.6M this weekend. So about as good as In The Heights (a musical with no stars). This makes me feel a little better about Heights’ poor showing, as did this piece from Collider explaining why it’s OK for movies to “fail” this summer. 💵
Kevin Feige is coordinating with Sony on Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer and marking… While this seems obvious, Feige’s direct involvement leads me to believe that the contents of the No Way Home trailer are directly influenced by something we haven’t seen yet — maybe the end of Loki? Much in the same way the Far From Home trailer included plot details from Endgame. This could explain why it’s taken so long for us to get a proper No Way Home trailer. 🕷
HBO Max accidentally sent out a mass test email and blamed the intern… Don’t throw the intern under the bus! That’s just rude. Thankfully, a lot of people came to this intern’s defense on social. 📬
Netflix is in talks to pick up Manifest… makes sense 🛩
Every Disney+ Marvel show is about the same thing… yeah, superheroes! Duh! 🦸♂️
Netflix cancels Jamie Foxx’s sitcom after one season… don’t blame it on the a-a-a-alcohol 🍿
Bryan Cranston and Annette Benning to star in Jerry and Marge Go Large… incredible title 🎥

What to watch
TV Trailer: Ted Lasso season 2 — Apple TV+ July 23
I have yet to recommend Ted Lasso in this space because it seems like an obvious one that I assume many of my readers have seen. If for some reason you haven’t, seriously get on that. From Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence and SNL alum Jason Sudeikis, Lasso tells the story of an amiable and optimistic college football coach who goes to lead a fledgling UK soccer club. It’s funny, kind, and hopeful like the best sitcoms are. No ironic detachment or cynicism here, just big heart that fans of Parks and Rec and Schitt’s Creek will absolutely appreciate. And just when you fallen into the comfort of its warm hug, Ted Lasso guts you with heartbreak and loss. Sudeikis leads a crackling cast that includes star-making turns from Hannah Waddingham, Juno Templs, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, Nick Mohammed, and Jeremy Swift. It’s a marvel — and headed straight for this year’s Emmys.
