Andor’s art department built an 8.5-acre, 360-degree set… There’s been a lot of hype around ILM’s virtual set The Volume, which allows shows like The Mandalorian and Obi-Wan to traverse the galaxy without ever leaving their Manhattan Beach warehouse. But there’s something to be said for the tactical and the real. Tony Gilroy’s upcoming Star Wars show Andor didn’t use The Volume at all. Instead Gilroy opted for, in one instance, an 8.5-acre physical set. Huge. One actor recalled it having “like 10 city blocks.” Everything I hear about Andor makes me more and more excited. House of Dragon and Rings of Power might be sucking all the genre air up, but don’t discount what’s coming from the galaxy far away in just a few weeks. ✨
