What to know
Piracy could cost the streamers $117 billion by 2027… Paid plus ad-supported streaming services helped save the music industry from a piracy apocalypse. But with the splintered TV streaming landscape and the rising subscription costs of each individual service, I can’t imagine a similar turnaround for TV and film. Variety says streamers can stop password sharing as one way to curb piracy and recover lost revenue, but that won’t stop people from illegally downloading their content and might even drive audiences to said form of piracy. 🏴☠️

More alleged victims are cooperating with the D.A. in Jonathan Majors case… Variety reports, “multiple alleged abuse victims of Majors have come forward following his March arrest and are cooperating with the Manhattan district attorney’s office.” This is looking worse and worse by the day. Per Variety, “Disney is monitoring the fast-moving situation and has time to move deliberately.” Just speculating here, but I expect Disney and Marvel will sever ties with the actor. Recasting him in the future Avengers movies won’t be hard, but marketing around his role in the fully shot Loki season 2 this year will be tough. 😟
Will Ferrell shopping around golf comedy series… Will Ferrell is a man of many on-screen sports. He’s been a basketball star, a figure skater, a soccer coach, a cheerleader, and even a NASCAR driver. Next up, a pro golfer. There are some classic golf comedies, specifically Happy Gilmore and Caddyshack, so hopefully Ferrell has something new to say. ⛳️
F. Murray Abraham apologizes for Mythic Quest behavior… This is a pretty good apology as far as these things go—many in his position don’t even bother to apologize—but he still couches the apology with one qualifier, “I told jokes, nothing more.” I don’t know, seems like he’s trying to defend himself there, rather than taking full responsibility. 🤔
Zack Snyder says TV can take risks movies can’t, Euphoria could never be a film… I like the general point that he’s making. It’s true that television has such a wide breadth of content and feels bold and experimental even at the highest levels. But I disagree that Euphoria couldn’t be a movie, it would just have to be a smaller-scale indie. 🎞
BBC orders Lord of the Flies TV series… It’s about time we got a new adaptation of this seminal text. So many shows we love today, from Yellowjackets to Lost, owe their existence to Lord of the Flies. 🐚
Apple cancels Jason Katims’ Dear Edward after one season… This is Katims’ second consecutive show to go one-and-done, the guy cannot catch a break. ❌
Critics answer Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret with glowing reviews… It’s a good time to go to the movies. 🍅
You could live in Kendall Roy’s NYC penthouse from Succession… For the low, low cost of $29 million. 👀
Alec Baldwin’s manslaughter charges will be dropped, lawyers say… But it’s not clear if the charges could be refiled in the future. ⚖️
Hannah Waddingham to host Christmas special on Apple TV+… Love this for her. 🎄
Lily Tomlin and Issa Rae to receive honorary Peabody Awards… Right on. 🏆
