What to know

  • What will be nominated at the 2024 Oscars?… It’s my favorite time of year: Too early awards season predictions time! No post-Oscar week would be complete without some completely speculative guesses for next year. Obviously we’ve got Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, and maybe Ridley Scott’s Napoleon. Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein biopic Maestro seems likely to be in the mix, as does Jonathan Majors’ performance in Magazine Dreams. Dune: Part Two will look to follow up on its predecessor’s success — and can Barbie make the jump from blockbuster to Oscar hopeful too? Elsewhere, I’d bet Across the Spider-Verse is the favorite for Animated Feature. Variety has way more movies to keep an eye on, but let’s not think too hard about all this for at least 5 months. 🏆

  • Character actor Lance Reddick has died at 60… Extremely sad news. Almost no one has a better and more varied IMDb page than Reddick, who since 1996 has been in 104 projects spanning drama, comedy, animation, and video games. You might know him from Lost, Fringe, John Wick, Bosch, or The Wire, or maybe as a voice on DuckTales or Rick and Morty. Reddick’s grounded and weighty presence always elevated whatever he was in. His reps reported that he died of natural causes. We lost a great one today, he’ll definitely be missed.
