What to know
Spielberg, Scorsese line up next projects… The big news is that Scorsese is hoping to make a Frank Sinatra biopic with who else but Leonardo DiCaprio as the legendary singer and actor and Jennifer Lawrence as Sinatra’s second wife, actress Ava Gardner. Sony is said to be the frontrunner for landing the film, but Sinatra’s daughter Tina currently controls his estate and she reportedly hasn’t given the movie her blessing yet. Meanwhile, Variety reports that Steven Spielberg is also working on his next movie, which is said to be a UFO story based on his original idea. He’s got Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp working on the script.
Aliens are familiar territory for Spielberg, what with Close Encounters, ET, and War of the Worlds. Last year he discussed the military UAP sightings with Stephen Colbert — and this MIGHT be a spoiler for the movie he’s working —
but he shared his theory about them: “What if it’s us, 500,000 years in the future?”
That would be a cool idea for a movie. 🎥
Secret post-Sopranos clip surfaces… According to an interview Edie Falco did with The Atlantic in 2021, after The Sopranos ended, she and James Gandolfini got requests all the time to play their characters again — but Gandolfini always turned them down. Except for one time in 2010, when the New York Knicks asked him and Falco to reprise Tony and Carmela in a short film aimed at bringing LeBron James to New York. This is back when LeBron was a free agent after leaving Cleveland. The Knicks cooked up this video idea featuring NY icons selling him on the city. It was like the Cameo to end all Cameos, with appearances from Chris Rock, Mike Bloomberg, Robert De Niro, Alec Baldwin, Spike Lee — as well as Donald Trump, Rudy Giuliani, and Harvey Weinstein. Seriously. And then yes Gandolfini and Falco as their Sopranos characters 3 years after the finale. Falco told the Atlantic “I thought it was a prank when someone said [Gandolfini] was going to do it…[and then] there he was, dressed as Tony. He must have been a bigger basketball fan than I realized.” So while it’s safe to assume that LeBron got to see it, the video never made its way online, until now. The Pablo Torre Finds Out podcast broke down the full video on YouTube. 🏀
The Office spinoff/reboot casts Domhnall Gleeson and White Lotus’s Sabrina Impacciatore… Two pretty good choices if you ask me. The trades are calling this a reboot, but it seems more like a spinoff or a reinvention to me. The show “will be set in a new office with new characters but will take place in the same universe as the original series.” 👔
Quentin Tarantino scraps The Movie Critic… Well, so much for that! The movie was supposed to be QT’s 10th and final film and potentially star Brad Pitt, but it seems the director changed his mind and is dropping the project entirely. Stay tuned for whatever comes next from him. ❌
Netflix will stop sharing subscriber numbers in 2025… Damn, I did not see that coming. I thought we were heading for a more transparent streaming future. Netflix will apparently focus on user engagement in its reporting instead. Makes sense. Regardless, this is apparenrly ruffling feathers on Wall Street, but Apple did a similar thing with iPhone sales in 2018 — and it was a success. 🍿
Justice Smith, Dominic Sessa, Arianna Gleenbatt cast in Now You See Me 3… Good to see Sessa land a big follow up role to The Holdovers. 🪄
For All Mankind renewed for 5th season, and a Russian-set spinoff… Translation: Apple has confidence in this franchise. 🚀
The Sundance Film Festival is looking to relocate… That would be the end of an era for sure. ❄️
Park Chan Wook is developing an Oldboy TV show… After seeing The Sympathizer, I think this could work. 🤔
Trailers: M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap and Richard Linklater’s Hitman… Come get your trailers. ▶️
Crazy Rich Asians Broadway musical in the works… Love it. 🎭
Fallout renewed for season 2… Makes sense. 🎮
