What to know

  • Hugh Jackman reviving Wolverine for MCU Deadpool 3, coming 2024… Surprise! In a pair of pretty funny videos, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman revealed that Wolverine will team up with Deadpool in the latter’s trilogy capper two years from now. The hopefully R-rated film will be made by Kevin Feige’s Marvel Studios and take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. (Disney buying Fox allowed all this to happen.) This is all very exciting as Jackman and Reynolds have an infamous off-screen “feud,” and at last they’ll explore their hilarious chemistry in a big, likely meta way on screen. I’m glad all the parties involved decided to do this before Jackman got too old and Marvel pivoted to a new Wolverine; it should be a riot. And Jackman’s inclusion will probably boost the box office returns too.

But I’ve got some questions: How will Jackman’s Wolverine appearance be explained canonically within the MCU? Jackman confirmed that this reprisal will not mess with the continuity of Logan. That’s good, because that movie is perfect and deserves not to be messed with (hopefully this coda performance doesn’t cheapen what Jackman did there). I bet some multiversal shenanigans will be at play. How much will Wolverine be involved in the story? These announcements give the feeling that it will be a full-on two-hander. And finally, what does this mean for the future of the X-Men in the MCU? Does this appearance delay Marvel from getting a new Wolverine in the mix?
